The website based on digital curation has attracted a mostly female demographic, pinning items such as recipes as well as wedding and fashion ideas. Pinterest is still invite only for its members, making the site even more captivating for those not yet ‘pinning’.

The question now is: how will brands start using Pinterest? With a higher percent of female over male users, Pinterest is not the right media for every brand. Some brands, such as Whole Foods and Nordstrom, have already created their own ‘pinboards’ to promote their brands. It will be interesting to see how brands will start using this new social media.

Here’s a Pinteresting infographic created by full service agency, Modea, using comScore statistics.

Does this awkward-yet-determined rapper in the polo look familiar? He should. That’s a 19-year-old Kanye West, performing at the Double Door back in the day. Always cool to see a local legend early in his career.

So I just got word that Britain’s Ad Standard’s Authority just pulled an ad from Drop Dead clothing due to a complaint that the model was TOO skinny. Ad Standard’s Authority (ASA) agreed stating it was “socially irresponsible” to see the model’s bone structure to the point that it distracts from what she’s wearing. Way to be socially conscious guys. But H&M received 9 complaints addressing the exact the issue and that wasn’t pulled. Peculiar no?

Last Saturday brought the announcement that Joe Paterno - Penn State Head Football Coach - would be retiring at the end of this season. He has over 400 wins and is in his 60-odd number of seasons with the Lions, 46 of which were spent as head coach. He is a legacy.

I grew up in Pennsylvania, not too far from State College so I’ve heard about Joe Pa since I was born. We all joke that Joe Pa would be coaching football from his death bed before he retired. You can imagine the surprise when he announced his retirement.

That alone got minimal press coverage outside of the college football arena. However, on Wednesday when the media picked up that Joe Pa and the president of the college had been fired by the board of trustees, well there was hell. Literally. College students across the Penn State campuses were rioting. One student was quoted in the RedEye:

The answer, maybe, is with the 19-year-old Penn State student who told USA Today it was “disrespectful” to fire Paterno. In her eyes, the integrity of the elderly coach came from what he had accomplished on the field in those 46 years, not what he had failed to accomplish when no one was looking.

I couldn’t believe this. I mean, I guess where she is coming from, but seriously? A large part of who Joe Pa was, encompassed honor, integrity and do what was right no matter how difficult. The whole matter of whether Joe Pa should have been fired or allowed to finish out the season can be argued for days. Ultimately the Board of Trustees did what they felt was right and the fans need to live with that.

In other news, Notre Dame played University of Maryland Terps for the second time in a long time. The Terps, despite their recent coaching change to former UConn head coach, aren’t doing so hot. They were as a 2-7 record and fell to a 2-8 record Saturday night. Saturday’s game was part of Notre Dame’s Shamrock Series. They play home games at famous stadiums around the country. They played Army last season at Yankees Stadium in New York and faced the Mighty Terps at FedEx Field in Landover Maryland.

Notre Dame performed beautifully. They kept they picked up another high scoring win of 45-21. They were only outscored in the fourth quarter when they allowed two touchdowns. Viewers were also lucky enough to see Hendrix play a few snaps. Despite the Terps bad record, they managed to hold their own quite well in the game, getting in two sacks. The Notre Dame offensive line hasn’t allowed any sacks since September. The Irish were also playing a little off balance as they were dealing with a number of injured players. Their starting center M.Golic Jr was out with and injury, but his replacement, A.Nuss, played quite up to par. The Irish were also subbing wide receiver R.Toma for T.Riddick. Toma made some great plays that helped to get the Irish their big win. Running backs C.Wood and J.Gray also had big days - Gray scoring two of the Irish’s touchdowns. And we can’t forget the amazing kicker, D.Ruffer who made a career long, 52-yard field goal. All in all the Fighting Irish came out to win and win they did. The announcers even spoke again to the idea that they might just be good enough to beat No.8 Standford in two weeks…we shall see.

One of the biggest games of the weekend came for TCU Horned Frogs. They were set to play high ranked, Boise State - the favored team. But the Horned Frogs are not to be underestimated. They pulled out a HUGE upset over Boise State, winning 36-35. This boosted their ranking to No.19 in the BCS Standings and dropped Boise State down to No.10. Topping the charts are LSU, Oklahoma State, Alabama, Oregon and Oklahoma ranked 1-5 (respectively). Among the Top 25 are No.7 Clemson, No.15 Wisconsin, No.18 USC, No.20 Michigan, No.21 Penn State, and No.24 Notre Dame. The next two weeks will make for some interesting football.

Me and Multiculturalisk

I was chosen to be in a panel discussion at Leo Burnett as a millennial to talk about multiculturalism and diversity. When I got the email that I had been picked, I was in shock—I’m not multicultural at all, I thought. Why would they choose me of all people? In my own mind, I am the whitest white girl you’ll meet so what importance would my opinion have in this discussion on multiculturalism and diversity? I was embarrassed to be up amongst the other millennials selected because they seemed and sounded so much more cultured than myself. I sighed with relief as the event concluded and the spotlight was no longer on the panel. As I got settled back at home I reflected on the experience. Multiculturalism doesn’t necessarily JUST apply to race or ethnicity, I decided, but a frame of mind that allows a person to accept, learn, and experience a ‘culture’ or lifestyle other than their own. And to further that, I thought about my son and his being biracial. Not only is he physically multicultural, but I will have the opportunity when he’s older to teach him what multiculturalism is in a deeper way. I grew up in a very bland town, primarily white (around 97% or so). Talk about lack of diversity! And when I began searching for colleges to attend, I visited a couple in Chicago. Chicago was perfect—far enough from home that I could easily visit family, but far enough away they wouldn’t visit me overly often; so radically different than home—I needed the change of pace; and so extremely diverse. It wasn’t like living in my hometown I was opposed to learning, experiencing different culture, I just wasn’t subjected to it, but I feel like choosing Columbia College was the pivoting moment of my ‘multiculturalism’ now that I consider it. Within the first few weeks in Chicago, I made my first African American friend, my first homosexual friend, my first Latino friend, my first Indian friend. I was in pure culture shock and went into question overdrive. My mindset was changing and that is when I became truly multicultural. I love, accept, learn, and experience other cultures proudly. I think I even surprise my family when I go home to visit. Sometimes it feels strange that I am a mother at 22 and yet I am still learning myself, learning who I am. I am a sister, daughter, friend, coworker, aunt, cousin, niece, granddaughter, student, and mother. I am passionate, enthusiastic, positive, hard working, loving, and honest. The Meth Project now has director Darren Aronofsky for their new advertisements. If you don’t recognize the name it’s likely you’ll remember the movie he directed back in 2000, Requiem for a Dream and 2010’s Black Swan. If you thought anti-meth ads were effective before, take a gander at this. Most games are played in the afternoon unless you live on the east coast and want to watch a west coast team. This season I have found myself more often than not moving mirrors into my living room or running between the bathroom and my living room to keep tabs on the game. Football is becoming the pre-party soundtrack of my apartment. I’m not sure what Brian Kelly and the Notre Dame athletic department was thinking, but I have them to thank for this change of pace.

As you may recall, my last post was short and sweet - the Notre Dame Fighting Irish didn’t seem to show up to their game against the USC Trojans, no matter how much we cheered for them. However, they sure did show up and show off for their battle with the Navy Midshipmen - winning 56-14, almost as impressive as their win over Air Force.

The topic of media coverage last week? Coach Kelly’s ability to make comments that would divide the team; his recruit versus the Charlie Weiss’s recruits. Now I’ve read the quote and honestly I think the media is the reason it was such a big freakin’ deal. Sure he basically said his recruits were better and you could tell. And sure some of the players responded negatively to it. HOWEVER, Kelly handled it quite well. When pushed about it by the media he simply said it was a family matter that was addressed and taken care of. And I have to say, after the impressive win over Navy who can say it wasn’t. Unfortunately the media seems to think otherwise. This week, again they brought up Kelly’s quote. Seriously? Find something new to talk about.

Notre Dame’s new helmets have been perfected to resemble the infamous Golden Dome. They are incredibly reflective with metallic flecks infused in the paint.

This week’s commentary also brought the history of Notre Dame and Wake Forest. How similar and yet different the schools are. This was the first meeting between the two schools. This is not uncommon for Notre Dame since they are qualified as an Independent school in the NCAA, not participating in any conference. ND is known to work out two year contracts with various schools across the country. There are only a handful of school ND plays every year - and they are the rivals that run deep. Both teams this had 5-1 records and needed a win to keep their chances of getting a bowl game bid.

It looked like it was going to be an intense, high scoring game in the beginning. Both teams put points on the board their first two possessions of the game, ending the first quarter with a 10-10 tie. By the second quarter the boys had settled into a groove and neither team seemed able to get anything moving. Wake Forest finally broke through and made a touch run to end the half 17-10. The second brought another game of chicken, until Notre Dame was finally able to pull ahead; scoring two more touch downs and keeping the Wake Forest offense at bay. The game ended when Quarterback Tommy Rees taking a knee and running the clock down. A 24-10 win over Wake Forest keeps the Notre Dame bowl game bid dream alive. Unfortunately they have to win the next three games, including the season closer again #4 Stanford. Don’t give up yet…Got to keep the faith. All we need is a little Irish Magic.

In other news, last night also brought top ranked BCS teams together. #1 LSU and #2 Alabama battled it out in a long game resulting in an overtime 9-6 win for LSU. Neither team was able to move the ball down the field to get anything but field goals up on the board.

Alabama gave LSU a run for their money, but ultimately the #1 team reined king. I’m sure those boys were tired at the end of the night, especially the defensive lines. I’m also sure that didn’t keep them from celebrating. LSU can keep their undefeated season and their hopes for a BCS Championship Bowl Game.
